Hudson Valley Special Olympics

Bard College student-athletes contribute to the Special Olympics New York program every year, volunteering with local agencies, hosting a Special Olympics Day on campus, and raising money to support athletes. These efforts are guided by CCE and the Bard College Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which is composed of two student athletes from each of Bard’s 19 intercollegiate athletic programs, in addition to three student officers.

Men’s Soccer and Ramapo for Children

The Men’s Soccer team has contributed to the Ramapo for Children program over the past several years, volunteering to help Ramapo’s neurodivergent community transition to independent living. Working with their staff assistant program, these Bard student-athletes travel to Ramapo every Sunday to volunteer, serving as role models and mentors for the young people.

The Men’s Soccer program as a whole, and the members of the team, have become an example for how to build community and friendship within a group.

“This opportunity has allowed us to have meaningful relationships with Ramapo when we are there and when we are on the field. One of the participants, Sam Sternberg, now serves as a volunteer assistant coach for the team,” says Reed Campbell, a Bard junior in the Men’s Soccer team.

“It was a ready-made opportunity to allow people from our team to help Ramapo’s young adults transition from young adulthood to living independently,” says Dylan Kotlowitz, a Bard junior in the Men’s Soccer team and a captain.

Ramapo’s mission is to keep young people from being relegated to the margins of their schools, programs, families, or communities because of challenging behaviors, cognitive disabilities, or other differences. Some activities that the Bard Men’s Soccer team has done are icebreaker games, get-to-know-bingo, soccer and kickball.

Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation

Bard College student-athletes have helped to raise awareness and funds for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, which helps fund support services for people affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley.

In the Fall of 2023, the women’s soccer, men’s soccer, and women’s volleyball teams each hosted “Pink Games” that drew attention to Miles of Hope’s mission. Those games have featured raffles, contests, donation tables, and more - while members of both teams have worn pick as part of their gameday gear to draw attention to the event. Across the three teams, more than $2,100 was raised for Miles of Hope - and the teams also used breaks in the action to honor friends and family who had been affected by breast cancer.

The teams followed up in October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month to continue the fundraising, partnering with the local Dunkin Donuts to help fundraise.

Established in 2004, Miles of Hope is focused on helping people throughout the Hudson Valley, with programs that include medical gap care, complementary medicine, college scholarships, and peer-to-peer programs to help those families affected by breast cancer.
