A Celebration of Connection: What to Expect at SmorgasBard

This winter, Bard students, faculty, staff, and community partners are invited to gather for SmorgasBard, an annual civic engagement celebration designed to highlight student-led initiatives and strengthen relationships between campus and the surrounding community. The event creates a lively, welcoming environment where people can learn from one another, celebrate shared work, and explore new ways to get involved.

According to Cicily Wilson, assistant Dean of Civic Engagement, the idea for SmorgasBard came from a desire to make these connections more visible and accessible on campus. “We wanted a way to bring our community partners together on campus while also celebrating Bard students’ various civic engagement initiatives,” Wilson shared.

Throughout the event, students will showcase their civic engagement work through a poster session, offering a chance for attendees to learn about volunteer projects, internships, and partnerships happening both on and off campus. These poster displays are designed to highlight the real-world impact of student work while creating space for conversation and collaboration.

This year’s SmorgasBard will also feature a lineup of interactive and celebratory activities. One of the most anticipated elements is the cookie decorating station, which doubles as a friendly competition. “Students will have a chance to decorate cookies with all the supplies they need, and they can either eat their cookie or enter it into the cookie decorating contest,” Wilson explained. “Winners will be awarded with various prizes.”

In addition to the creative activities, a meaningful cultural component has been incorporated into this year’s event. A Hanukkah lighting ceremony will take place during SmorgasBard, led by Rabbi Joshua Boettiger. The lighting is scheduled for 5:00 pm and is open to all students, faculty, staff, and community members. “The menorah lighting that evening will take place at 5 pm at our event; all are welcome to join us for a fun evening,” Wilson adds.

SmorgasBard is a collaborative effort made possible through the work of multiple campus partners, including the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE), TLS, CDO, Bard Chaplaincy, and ELAS faculty. These groups work together behind the scenes to create an event that reflects Bard’s commitment to experiential learning and community partnerships.

Beyond the activities, SmorgasBard’s deeper purpose lies in its role in building a sense of belonging and shared responsibility. Wilson emphasized that the event is about more than just programming. “I think that bringing people together to share an experience is part of community building,” she said. “Inviting our community partners to campus helps them feel more connected to Bard and see our campus, students, faculty, and staff as part of their community.”

For students, SmorgasBard offers a unique opportunity to network with peers who are already involved in civic and community-based work, learn about new opportunities, and find pathways to meaningful engagement. Whether you are already active in the community or just beginning to explore ways to get involved, the event provides an accessible, welcoming entry point.
