Bard Prison Initiative Accepts Transfer Students and Undertakes Unprecedented Expansion in Wake of Two College Closures, Reports Inside Higher Ed

The Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) has accepted 80 transfer students alongside 122 students through standard admissions, increasing its current enrollment to more than 400 students—the program’s largest expansion to date. Amid the recent closures of Medaille University and Alliance University, two private New York colleges with longstanding college-in-prison programs, BPI offered their students immediate enrollment in Bard College as transfer students to ensure no incarcerated college student is left without the ability to complete a degree. Medaille and Alliance had enrolled students in degree programs at Albion Correctional Facility for women and at Fishkill Correctional Facility for men, respectively. The enrollment of Medaille and Alliance transfer students will double the size of BPI’s student body at Albion and Fishkill.
