Civic Ambassadors Funding Facts Vol. 3

In 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency awarded $3 million in federal funds to Dutchess County and the surrounding Hudson Valley region. The money comes from the Inflation Reduction Act, a major federal climate spending bill. Dutchess was one of just 25 areas nationwide selected to receive this funding, making it a significant destination for climate-related taxpayer dollars.

Most of the $3 million will be spent on methane-reduction infrastructure at closed landfills. This includes installing biofilters to reduce emissions and building solar panel systems with battery storage on capped sites. The funding also covers the creation of pollinator-friendly landscaping, but the bulk of the money goes toward large-scale emission control and energy generation.

This grant marks a major influx of federal money into local environmental projects. It reflects how national taxpayer funds are being used in specific, measurable ways—targeting old landfill sites with permanent infrastructure meant to reduce pollution and create new energy assets in Dutchess County.
