Efforts by the Center for Civic Engagement Highlighted in State of the Student Vote Newsletter
How well are colleges protecting the voting rights of their students? Bard’s Center for Civic Engagement is leading the way, with a history dating back to the 90s. For State of the Student Vote, a Substack newsletter devoted to coverage of the 26th Amendment, Britah Odondi details the efforts the CCE has taken over the decades, most recently its role in helping to enact new legislation mandating polling places in New York State on college campuses with 300 or more registered voters. Odondi suggests a series of actions colleges can take to emulate Bard’s efforts, arguing that institutions of higher education have a unique position in this struggle for student voting rights. “Their vigilance, advocacy, and institutional power are key to ensuring that the promise of the 26th Amendment is fulfilled,” she writes.
