“Like Climbing Everest”: OSUN Student Documentary “Breaking Barriers” Highlights the Struggle for Disability Inclusion in Bangladesh

A scene from the OSUN student-made documentary "Breaking Barriers."
BRAC University recently premiered “Breaking Barriers,” a compelling short documentary created by students that explores the unique challenges faced by higher education students with disabilities in Bangladesh. Supported by a grant from OSUN, the film is part of a project to empower student filmmakers creating impactful documentaries focused on social justice and civic engagement. The hope is that such films will serve as both educational tools and catalysts for meaningful discussions within, and beyond, the classroom.

Through personal stories of students with disabilities and the insights of advocates, activists, and experts, the film compares the current reality of limited accessibility in Bangladesh with the possibilities for a more inclusive education experience. Produced by BRAC students Umma Maimuna Alam, Atiqur Rahman Priyom, Partho Protim Chowdhury, and Iftear Hasan Tanvir under the guidance of instructor Dina Hossain, "Breaking Barriers" received enthusiastic feedback from an audience of 100 at BRAC University.

"Breaking Barriers" has been published on the OSUN website, along with several other student-made films, as freely available case studies for use as pedagogical tools to enhance critical thinking and debate in the classroom.

The documentary follows the journey of Rahim, a BRAC University student who uses a wheelchair, and features the insights of notable experts, making it a vital resource to educate audiences on the importance of building an inclusive society.  Experts featured in the film include Vashkar Bhattacharjee from A2i, Sabrina Sultana, founder of B-SCAN and Krishti, and Fahmida Rahman, BRAC University faculty member and a researcher in inclusive education.

BRAC University administrators have said the institution aims to further its commitment to supporting students with disabilities and expanding access to higher education within private institutions. Through this screening and dialogue that followed, the event highlighted the power of storytelling to address pressing social issues and foster student engagement in advancing disability inclusion.
