CCE facilitates deep and sustainable relationships with Bard’s neighbors. We support students and faculty in their work with partners to address real issues facing our communities, promote dialogue and debate, and effect change. Partnerships can take many forms, including internships, volunteer and community-based learning opportunities, joint projects, conferences, and research, as well as innovative cross-cultural and artistic initiatives.

The Martin Luther King Day of Engagement
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” These words from Martin Luther King Jr. are the call to action behind the nationwide Day of Service that takes place on the King holiday. Every year Bard students, staff, and faculty take these words to heart as they volunteer with dozens of organizations across the Hudson Valley for the MLK Day of Engagement, ranging from Woodstock Animal Sanctuary and the Red Hook Public Library to Planned Parenthood.

Civic Engagement During the Language and Thinking Program
Every August, Bard College first-year students come to campus for an intensive, three-week introduction to the liberal arts known as the Language and Thinking Program. In addition to the academic program, new students take part in civic engagement opportunities on campus and in the community. Activities have included: refurbishing the Red Hook Food Pantry, working on the Bard Farm, visiting with residents of Ferncliff Nursing Home, and doing experiments with children at the Red Hook Library.
